Navigating the NHS work schedule

Course Overview

This module is designed to help International Medical Graduates understand how NHS work schedules, rotas, leave systems, and contractual safeguards operate within UK healthcare settings.
For many IMGs, NHS rotas can initially feel complex and unfamiliar. Understanding shift patterns, zero days, annual leave, study leave, locum work, exception reporting, and safe working regulations is essential not only for maintaining wellbeing, but also for protecting patient safety, avoiding burnout, and safeguarding your contractual rights.
This module provides a practical overview of how NHS doctor rotas are structured, how work schedules are monitored, and what protections are built into the 2016 Junior Doctor Contract. Learners will also develop a clearer understanding of annual leave entitlements, study leave funding, rota changes, enhanced pay, exception reporting, and the role of the Guardian of Safe Working Hours.
The course has been designed to help IMGs navigate NHS working life more confidently, understand their rights and responsibilities, and develop healthier, safer, and more sustainable working practices within the NHS.
